Puppets keep kids busy, active and learning for hours.
Here are a few very simple, easy ideas for you to try with your kids.
Gather you materials
- tissue tubes
- clipart images (color or black/white)
- scissors
- tape
- glue
- crayons
Tissue tubes need to be tall enough and strong enough to hold the puppet up without tipping. I cut tissue tubes in half and that works well for images up to 3 inches.
Larger clipart, 3 – 4 inches, is easy to handle and if the kids are going to make up plays and skits the bigger images are much easier to manipulate and also they are large enough to be seen by the audience.
Use black/white clipart for children who want to color their own images.
Attach your clipart to the tube
Apply a strip of glue to the tube. A piece of scotch tape around the bottom holds the image in place.
Puppets inspire writing!
Clipart puppets are not only fun and easy to make they inspire kids to write, role-play and tell stories.
Teachers and parents…set a puppet at each child’s desk.
For 1st graders and above add a simple worksheet. For example: Who is this character? What is their favorite food? What happens when they get angry, excited, or annoyed?
After the puppets are decorated and glued in place it is a perfect time for kids to share about their characters. This helps to bring their puppet to life and motivates ideas for creative writing and storytelling.
