Turn on your computer and grab a few Leprechaun clip art images. Children’s drawings make super cute clip art for your projects too. (The images in the examples are from St. Patrick’s Day Kids clip art.)
1) Stick Puppets with Clip Art
One of the easiest clipart projects to create is a clip art stick puppet. Kids can use their puppets for your St. Patrick’s Day activities and for tons of other educational activities like role play, storytelling, interpreting historical events, solving problems, and more.
Make a Puppet Page
In your favorite word processing program, set up a page 11 inches wide by 8 1/2 inches. Insert 3 or 4 black line clip art images across the top.
I like to make the puppets about 5 inches tall. This allows enough room for the kids to add details (polka dots, pockets, patterns) before they color the images.
Click here for a short tutorial on how to use clip art in a page layout program.
One of the great things about clip art is that you can enlarge it (or reduce it) to any size.
Print on card-stock if possible.
Introduce the Project
- How do you celebrate St. Patrick’s Day?
- Why do you think people wear green on this day?
- What is a Leprechaun?
- What are some symbols we see on St. Patrick’s Day? (Pot of gold, rainbows, clovers)
- Make a puppet and story about St. Patrick’s Day and the mischievous Leprechaun.
When you are ready for students to cut out their puppet pieces, encourage them to leave a little white space around the images when they cut them out. It makes cutting around details much easier (see image below).
Have kids color their image and glue a craft stick to the back. Now they are ready to tell stories and write plays about St. Patrick’s Day, Leprechauns and Four-Leaf Clovers.
Coloring Pages
Coloring pages are so easy to make and educational too. Add writing prompts that fit the season or the curriculum.
Make coloring pages ahead of time and keep them on hand for early finishers.
All you need for a coloring page is a black and white clip art image. Most clip art can be enlarged or reduced to fit your space. You may print this page out and use it with your kids but go-ahead and try creating your own coloring pages. I THINK YOU WILL LOVE IT.
Creative Writing Coloring Pages
Coloring pages are educational too. Add word and picture clip art to your page that reflects a holiday, a season or a topic you are studying. Kids can use picture clues to decode words.
Help yourself to this free download...BUT try your own – you will see how rewarding it is to create a layout exactly the way you want it, and it is so easy.
Writing Prompts and Coloring
Some clip art can be enlarged and the images can overlap to create some fun layouts. The page below includes 3 images that overlap.
After you add images to your page, include writing prompts that kids can respond to with words or pictures.
Open-ended prompts make an activity more accessible to all skill levels, and I find that the more open-ended the prompts, the more individualized and creative the results.
St. Patrick's Day Activities With Clipart
Creating task cards with clip art starts with a simple template. Once you have your template that way you want it, it can easily be changed and used over and over again.
To create your TASK CARD TEMPLATE, set up a page with the number of spaces/cards you want. Save it as a template. Opening and entering your text and images is an easy task after that.
I make my task cards on a page with 8 spaces. That is a nice size for cute clip art and 2-3 sentences (directions, prompts, trivia, etc.) This size looks inviting at a center.
Personalized Stationery With Clip Art
Receiving a personalized note with fun seasonal images is always a treat. Add clipart, personalize with your name, favorite quote, or class motto.
Your template is ready for you to replace your clovers with spring flowers.
This is another very simple page to set up.
- letter size page
- cute clip art at the bottom
- a little matching image at the top
- your name of course
St. Patrick's Day Activities, Reward Cards, and Clip Art
Surprise kids with a reward on their desk when they arrive on St. Patrick’s Day. Adding colorful clipart to your page is easy and the kids will love the recognition. If you are meeting in the classroom, add a cookie as a special treat!
Create a Template
To create these cards, open PowerPoint or your favorite page layout program and divide your page into the number of cards you want on each page. When this page is printed and cut out there will be a white border around each card.
Create a page with all the same images or a variety of images. Remember, once you create your layout, save it as a template. It is easy to change the text from month to month.
If you are new to clip art and how to use it, you can download Karen’s Kids monthly clip art FREEBIE and practice making your own fun projects.
Jokes, Compliments and Riddles Cards With Clipart
St. Patrick’s Day jokes and riddles are a big hit with the kids. Compliment cards are a favorite too. Add phrases to the cards that you use with your kids (attitude-check, power on, Sensational Second Graders).
Karen’s Kids GIGGLE GRAMS include science trivia, knock, knock jokes, and holiday riddles. My Jr. Highers still enjoy the joke cards when they get them in their snack bags.
You’re never too old for a giggle.
Free Template to Download
You may Download this template. It is a clipart image with cutting lines that mark the borders for 10 cards. After you download the image, add it to your page layout like you would add any clipart image. It should already fit your 8 1/2 X 11-inch paper.
Next, insert your clipart images into each section and then add your text. (Check your page layout guidelines for specific questions about how to add clip art to your page.)
